Romance Spotlight: Nike

Happy Valentines Day everyone! I can't think of a better way to celebrate than with a romantic story! This week's ROMANCE SPOTLIGHT is from my sister Nike who is visiting today from Choose to Thrive.
I hope you take a minute to check out her awesome blog about crafting without spending a dime! Its great! Really.

Take it away Nike!

Hi everyone! I’m Nike from Choose To Thrive and I’m excited to be here on Friday Night Date Night to share some of the story of how me and my husband Ben (or as I like to call him-Peterson) began our story.
It was a Thursday.
I had come home from work at Target and enjoyed dinner and lighting off fireworks in the cul de sac with my mom, brother and sister. An hour later, we left for a huge 4th of July fireworks show at the local winery that spilled onto the massive field next door.

And as fate would have it, I ran into a friend from church at the concession stand and wandered over to where some of our friends were hanging out on the opposite side of the massive field. As I sat talking and catching up with friends who were home for the summer from college and missions, I heard and saw someone talking about me out of the corner of my eye.  When I finally turned to see who it was, there was this guy – Peterson – who asked me if he’d seen me at church the Sunday before. Over the next hour – and through the entire fireworks show – we talked and laughed and made fun of all those idiot friends we knew who met, dated and married the person of their dreams within months. Dumb, dumb people we laughed. He also told me about the movie Independence Day that had just come out in theatres. I wanted to see it and he happily offered to take me and sit through it again on Saturday… if he could get a phone number out of me. Since this was long before the days of cell phones and texting, we both wandered back to where my family was sitting and borrowed a pen from Mom’s purse.  I would learn later that Mom told my Dad that night that she’d met the man I was going to marry and that he needed to get ready, because  it would be quick.
And she was right—it was quick. Like July 30th quick. Like less than a month later quick.
And it was a Tuesday.
Peterson picked me up and we stopped by my great grandparents home before heading to our favorite place – Alki Beach. The view of the Seattle skyline at night had spun a particular brand of magic at that place—a place that we had retread to several times to spend quiet time talking about what life would be like together.

And on that beach we had laughed and joked, cried and argued, made up and held each other close. And on that Tuesday as the sun lingering on the horizon … I sat in the sand wrapped in Peterson’s arms … and watched the sea roll in and break against the shore … and felt the warmth and protection as his arms pulled me in closer … and heard him whisper how much he loved me and never wanted that to end … and that his dreams of a life and family and future were in me.
But school and work and family schedules would mean that a wedding couldn’t happen right away.  And so a few weeks after getting engaged, I drove away from Peterson on a Friday morning in tears and headed back to school. Soon after he would send me this picture of him standing alone where we had met. The back of the picture read simply, “Imagine Fireworks.”

Waiting for our day was long and painful; we ached to be together and struggled through the stress of being apart. By that Friday in February 1997, we were ready to crack and even called off the wedding … and spent a week totally alone … and then met the next Friday night – Valentine’s Day – to see if we could work everything out.  And in a quiet, candle-lit room, we talked and cried and forgave and promised and moved forward united. When I think back on that night, I smile and remember what almost wasn’t and give thanks for what was. Because ten years to the day, we spent a Wednesday night in another quiet, dimly lit room holding our fifth child after an emergency c-section during what should have been our Valentine’s Day dinner.

But Saturday … oh how I loved that Saturday.
That crazy Saturday after Thanksgiving when we drove to the Seattle Temple under threatening skies and a brisk wind. And in the largest sealing room they had, we promised forever in front of our family and friends. And as everyone left room 11 and started for the lobby, Peterson and I ducked into the back stair well … and paused in between floors … and told each other privately just as we had at Alki Beach how much we loved each other and never wanted it to end … and that all of our dreams for a life and family and future were together. As we left the temple, there would be no beautiful pictures on the grounds that we could frame and look back on and remember. All we managed were just a few quick pictures under the covered entry before we raced through sleet, rain and wind towards cars that would take us to the reception. But even with no real pictures and crummy weather, it was such a beautiful day.

The funny thing is that I remember thinking that I could never love Peterson more than I did on our wedding day.
How wrong I was.
Because that love got bigger the night my husband held me close as my body shook with sobs after I miscarried. And I loved him more still when we went through it again six months later. And then a third time still.  And every Mother’s Day and Father’s Day that passed childless brought us closer together until that Wednesday in 2001 when my husband became a father.

And I fell in love with him all over again each time he stood beside my hospital bed and held my hand as each of our six children arrived.

And I loved him more as he’s stood by me during the last fourteen years and been my biggest fan and cheerleader. He supports my crazy ideas and grand plans even when I fail. I feel so blessed to be loved by a man who sees me as smart, capable and beautiful even when I don’t believe it myself.

And that love has only grown since that Friday in 2009 following a layoff when I left for work and he stayed home with our kids. I will never know how hard it was for him to be out of work and not able to support his family, but the way he handled those six months taught me so much about love, dignity, honor, duty and respect. He chose to thrive and move forward in a place he never thought he’d be.  And talk about thriving … Peterson came out the backside of our layoff adventure with two degrees, a new-found talent for artisan baking and the love of his children who got a rare chance to spend that much extra time with Daddy.

And now? I am reminded of how much I love him still like I was last Monday when I surprised him for lunch … and we parked our Suburban in front of his office and munched on drive through chicken strips … and talked about new flooring in the kitchen  and the kids’ report cards … and goofed off with the camera while the little kids polished off our drinks in the back seat.  Man I love this guy.

Good days and bad, struggles and joys … I feel lucky and happy to spend everyday with Peterson.

Thanks Sista! Loved it! And the brother-in-law (Peterson)!

Fire Station

We went on a lot of fun dates on our honeymoon. We spent part of it in Seattle, Washington. One day, we stopped at a downtown fire station. It was great! We got to climb up and around the trucks and dress up. I felt like I was 6 years old  again.

Most fire departments will let you visit the station and take a tour for free! Call ahead first to make sure though. We had a blast together. Childhood dreams of being a fireman and make-believe came flooding back like it was yesterday.

Call your local station and see if you can squeeze in a date there. It is well worth it!

I'm a Little Teapot...

...Short and stout

When I get all steamed up here me shout...

Look at this place! Nuts huh? It's an honest-to-goodness teapot house!
Hubby is making fast progress on his road to recovery but was really wanting some fish. This little place just happens to be our local fish market.

The guy that owns it drives up to Baltimore twice a week to get fresh fish. I'm not a huge fish eater but since poor sweet Hubby was hurting I said he could get whatever he wanted.

What was I thinking?

He choose wild salmon that was overnight-ed from Scotland. It cost $18 a pound!!!
For starving students, that is a fortune! Do you know how many meals of ramen noodles that would equal? And he's the only one that will eat it!!!

OK. Rant over.

Other than that, this was a great date. What a cool building and this was the first time Hubby had been outside since his surgery. He was one happy boy.

Do you have any quirky little shops in your neighborhood?
Go on a date and send me some pics! I'd love to feature you!

Happy Dating!

The National Mall

Since Hubby is still lying low after his surgery, I thought I would post about dates that we went on earlier in our marriage.

Before Sweet B was born we went and took a tour of  our Nation's Capitol. I was pregnant, cold, and my feet hurt. Therefore there are no pictures of the grouchy pregnant lady. :)

It WAS fun though. We stopped at all the important monuments and memorials and ended the day at a Spanish restaurant the made my pregnant belly a little too queasy.

The great thing about the National Mall is that its free. How often can you go see so many sights and not pay a dime? Not very often these days. Take advantage of it! Visit those free monuments and memorials in your neighborhood. And maybe brush up on some history while your at it.

Happy Dating!

Valentines Day Prep: Movies

In continuing with our preparation for Valentine's Day, I have compiled a list of movies that I think would be wonderful picks for the holiday.

If you plan to end your Lover's holiday with a movie, decide NOW which one it will be. Make sure you have it on hand, borrow, or request it from Netflix etc. And check to see if your Hubby will even sit through it. I don't know about you, but that's my biggest challenge.

First on my list would be Pride and Prejudice. I just love Jane Austen anything and this is a classic story. However, Hubby is not on the same boat as me on this one. Bummer.

Pride & Prejudice

Hubby does enjoy movies with Jummy Stewart and Ginger Rogers though. Movies like this one: Vivacious Lady. It's romantic AND hilarious!

Another classic is Roman Holiday. Just love Audrey Hepburn!

BBC's version of Emma is fantastic! I must admit I was skeptical about this one. I didn't think it could get better than Gwyneth Paltrow. But it can. Like, 10 times better. I will never go back.

And last but certainly not least, An Affair to Remember. Another classic.

I love all of these not only because they are romantic, but wholesome too! Good CLEAN movies. I don't want to watch something that makes me feel uncomfortable.

So which one will it be? What will you two be watching? Leave me a comment to let me know!

Romance Spotlight!

I hope that everyone has noticed my weekly ROMANCE SPOTLIGHT!
Every Tuesday I have a guest blogger tell a romantic story or date.
But today I am going to be a little selfish and spotlight myself.
Because I can. Hehehe

Hubby and I met in the Washington D.C. Dulles airport. True Story.
I was 18. Fresh out of high school and a little nervous to be moving across the county by myself. He was 21 and back from his two year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Mississippi. My instructions were to "find other students going to SVU at the airport and wait with them for a shuttle".

How the heck was I supposed to identify SVU students in a huge airport?

I held back tears as I clumsily rolled my suitcases up and down the baggage claim. It was late at night and I was alone, in an airport and city that I had never been in before. I finally gave up and sat down in one of the claims hopping that someone would find me.

Eventually, someone did. A girl walked over to me and told me that a group of students was waiting in another claim to be picked up by the school's shuttle. Hubby was in that group. As this girl introduced me to everyone else that was waiting, I couldn't help but notice how smokin' hot this guy was. But when she got to him, all he did was look up at me and then back down to his lap top.

Really?

Not only was I a young, nervous girl, but the people at this school I was going to attend seemed so mean!

After a few hours of waiting, I pulled out some crackers that I had been snacking on and offered them to everyone waiting in the group. Suddenly Hubby perked up. "I'll have some!"

Again. Really?

No greeting of any kind. Not a hello, hey, hi. Nothing. Nada. But as soon as food enters the picture, he is more than willing to talk to me.

Who is this guy?

First impressions aren't always good ones. After our cracker exchange we got to talking and found out that he was actually very nice but never thought I would ever stand a chance with him.
A couple of weeks later though we found each other on campus and started dating.

When I met Hubby, he had never kissed anyone. Ever. He always said that he wanted to save his kisses for his wife. And I just thought that was so sweet!

After we had been dating awhile, he grabbed me one night and gave me a kiss! I was thrilled but confused at the same time.

"I thought you were going to save that for the girl you marry."

He looked me in the eye and said "I did."

The rest, as they say, is history. We were married June 23rd in the Salt Lake Temple.
I can honestly say that I am married to my best friend and loving every minute of it.

If you are interested in sharing a romantic story or date please let me know! It doesn't even have to be romantic.  Just any story about you and your Hubby.
You can leave me a comment or email me at pmwhiteley (at) gmail (dot) com.

See you next Tuesday for another ROMANCE SPOTLIGHT!

HAPPY DATING!
